One Magical Day

Some days are better than others. It´s a fact.
And this July day somewhere on Nordkalotten was better than most.
With huge hatches of all kinds of insects and big, rising fish all over the place,
this is the stuff that winter dreams are made of.

How To Remove a Hook From a Human Body

Here´s a trick every angler should know: how to remove a barbed hook without any tools at all. It´s swift and painless!

While casting for a big, rising seatrout in the middle of the subarctic summer night, Tapani was unforunate enough to hook himself in the nose with a big fly. Luckily, I have done this procedure several times (even on myself once), and knew the super trick – otherwise there would have been a lot more blood involved…

Finnish Nonsense

Blog from Eco-Rapids #3

Hellau!

I´m back from Russia. Here are some interesting videos from our tour in Finland in early June.

The first one was made by Fredrik, who stole my camera and made this epic masterpiece entiteled Karja while I was searching desperately for the camera, thinking I´d forgotten it somewhere along the road:

The second film, What´s Up with the Lainen?, deals with the mythical Finnish word “lainen”.

Fredrik and I have been asking Finns about the meaning of this word for more than a year now, and we still haven´t gotten any good explanation for it. Poor Tapani is the victim this time:

Soon, we´ll go fishing together again! First, we´ll fish a mystical river somewhere on Nordkalotten for a couple of days, and then we´ll move into undiscovered country for a real expedition.

Stay tuned – lots more videos and stuff coming up!

Hot day running

I’m now slowly recovering from last Saturday’s running. As I told earlier me and Fredrik ran the Göteborgsvarvet, world’s biggest half marathon competition.

The day was very hot and sunny, the temperature was around 25-26 degrees celsius during the whole run. It was the first warm day this year and many of the runners had not been prepared for such warmth and the need of water. Around 1400 runners had to interrupt and 80 of them needed hospital care. It was scary to run and see people lying on the ground every now and then, totally passed out. Luckily the spectators and the medicals were all over the track and everyone got the help they needed.

Halfway done I realized I can’t make it to my time goal. I concentrated on drinking a lot of water and keeping an easy tempo. I wanted to to get to the finish line, not to the hospital. And I made it, just under two hours. My legs have been really sore, and so have my shoulders that got a very big dose of sunlight.

But what happened to Fredrik – did you make it to the gig?

JFF goes Göteborgsvarvet

In order to be in shape for the fishing season me and Fredrik decided to participate in the Göteborgsvarvet, a half marathon running competition in Gothenburg. It’s a big running party with around 50 000-60 000 runners, lots of bands playing by the track and the whole city watching and cheering. The weather forecast is promising warm wearther and sunshine so it will be really hot and sweatty!

My aim is to run under 1 hour 50 minutes, but it will be tough. I’m not sure if I can make it. Fredrik is starting ahead of me, with the “real” runners. His legs are about twice as long as mine and he totally lacks the ability to get tired when he’s moving. When he sits or lies down he can fell asleep in seconds. Power sleeping technique, he says. I remember him mentioning that he must make it to a gig after the running so he must keep up the running tempo. If he finishes at one and a half hours or faster, and he’ll be in time for the gig.

Keep your fingers crossed tomorrow, and all of you in Gothenburg come cheer us up! We are two of the 50 000 similar looking runners out there, you can’t miss us!

Urban Fly Fishing in Oslo

Urban trout – just another urban legend?

No! Check this out:

Today: a Photo of a (fat) Fish

Fredrik, JFF´s own sea trout master, has been to one of his secret seatrout spots around Gothenburg again. He sent us this picture just to make us jealous. Guess what? It´s working, Fred!

And what a beautiful fish! Since he is an accomplished chef, I´m sure he´s already made a tasty meal out of it.

How did you catch it, Fred? What´s your secret? Tell us! Tell us now! Must now! Must…. aarrgghhh…

Fat Freddie

The Silver Rush

Here’s my answer to Håvard’s video gear madness. Chaplin didn’t have the super colors and stereo mics, we don’t need them either.
But the music! Duke Ellington and his orchestra played jazz when jazz was young and the fish were big. And Fredrik’s monster trout is finally revealed here!

Today: a Photo

As we´ve written earlier, Fredrik is a true Renaissance man. He´s the kind of guy that can do anything – without really trying. This photo was taken yesterday with his trusty Nikon D90. I think it looks really cool.

Fred is sleeping right now after a rough night, but I guess he´ll explain a little bit about this picture later.

PS! I´m still stuck in Oslo. Doesn´t look too good for the Ukraine tour either.
